American Indian History and Culture in Kentucky

This is an in-class program geared toward grades K-8, and is focused on the Bluegrass Region. The program consists of two parts – a lecture and an activity (or activities). Program length depends on the chosen number of activities.

Part I - Lecture: Please choose one (30 minutes each)

1) Native Americans in Kentucky- Prehistory
(Core Content- SS-04-5.2.2, SS-07-4.2.2, SS-07-4.3.1, SS-07-4.3.2, SS-07-5.3.1, SS-07-5.3.5, SS-08-4.2.2, SS-08-4.3.1, SS-07-4.3.2, SS-08-4.3.2, SS-07-5.3.5, SS-EP-4.4.1)

2) Native Americans in Kentucky- From First Contact to Removal (Core Content- SS-04-2.1.1, SS-04.2.3.1, SS-08-2.3.1, SS-07-4.3.2, SS-08-4.3.2, SS-07-5.3.5)

3) Native American Culture - choose either Shawnee or Cherokee (intended for grades K-3, as an introduction to Native American history and culture) (Core Content - SS-EP-2.1.1)

4) Advanced Cultural History (Core Content - SS-07-2.1.1, SS-08-2.1.1)

Topics covered:
General history of the tribes, and changes over time
Difference in Technology and Culture in the different periods (pre-historic, archaic, woodland, and Historic)
Conflict with Settlers
Native American technology

Part II - Activity: (30 minutes each)

1) Music and Dance

2) Storytelling
(Core Content- AH 04-2.3.1, AH 05-2.3.1)

3) Arts and Crafts
(Core Content- AH- 04-2.4.1, AH-05-2.4.1)

*The activities are intended for K-6th grade, but can be adapted for 7th-8th if so desired.
