Exhibits - In Black & White
Collected in a Museum project funded by a grant from the Kentucky Humanities Council, this exhibit includes over 100 prints depicting African-American life in the Bluegrass from as early as 1860 through the 1950s. With the aid of Dr. Gerald Smith as co-director Museum volunteers conducted a series of “photo fairs” were family pictures were scanned and saved to add from selections from area collections not previously searched for African America content.
 Included in the collection are previously unseen pictures taken by young Calvert McCann during the tense days when Lexington and the nation were undergoing unrest as segregation was addressed on a national scale. Since they were first displayed at the Museum in 2003 the McCann collection has been the centerpiece of a series on the relative lack of notice of integration activities by local newspapers that attracted a Pulitzer Prize nomination and display at a U. S. Senate meeting on integration.
