Lexington During the Civil War

Lexington, capital of the Bluegrass, occupied a unique position in the War Between the States. Many of her sons wore the gray in Dixie, while an equally large number fought under the Stars and Stripes. Nowhere were families more divided, or sentiments more mixed.
—J. Winston Coleman, Jr., June 1, 1938

Lexington During the Civil War is based on the book of the same title by noted historian J. Winston Coleman, Jr., first published in 1938.
The narrative closely follows that of the author’s, including his quirky syntax and spellings, for which he was known. The text has been abridged in many places, particularly concerning individuals’ names that are not necessary to the narrative. Material in quotes is footnoted and annotated in the original publication. Where helpful to understand the modern context, bracketed text is provided.
The book is out of print, and original copies are quite valuable.

Lexington During the Civil War is part of the Kentucky Civil War Sesquicentennial, 2011-2015.
